Packing it all away

22 Jul

We’re down to those dreaded last few days before our move, and we’re surrounded by boxes, bubble wrap and packing tape. That said, we’ve made a lot of progress and we are doing a little at a time during the week and a lot at a time on the weekends. I wanted to share a bit of my process with you about packing and being able to find the things we need first and foremost, once we arrive in our new home.

I got this idea from a good friend, who has moved a lot in her life. I can’t believe I never thought of this and never heard about doing this before. So far, it is working really well for us. Here’s the breakdown.

Each box that we pack will have the name of the room it will go in once we arrive and the movers unload our haul {it’s definitely a haul…}. Then, the boxes will be numbered, starting with #1 for each room. We’ll have our master list that we’ve been editing as we pack, which tells us what’s in each box. That way, when we finish, we should have a very rough inventory of our junk stuff. My friend mentioned that her mother used to do this when they moved every few years, and she used index cards. Quickly, my mind raced to where I stored our index cards and thought it should be no problem. Then, after thinking a little longer, I decided to go the old Microsoft Word route so that I can do a quick “search and seizure” when trying to find specific items. I’m hoping this allows us to unpack a little faster once we arrive, as we have an awesome trip planned soon after. More on that later!

So, here’s a quick glance at a sample of our packing list.

Kitchen packing list

Why don’t we think of these things so easily ourselves? This is bound to make our unpacking a much smoother ride than the packing part. Oh, and sorry our kitchen items are not more exciting. I guess I could have shown you something more fun, like my craft supplies. As you can see, I didn’t get too specific. We certainly didn’t list out all of the books that took up about 8-10 of our boxes! Thank goodness–or we would have to postpone our move another week.

PS — As a quick addition to this post, I decided to share with you a photo I snapped of the mugs that took over our countertop as I was packing (and this isn’t even all of them). I obviously have a mug problem. Thanks for pointing that out, Angelique! πŸ˜‰

Do you have any great packing tips to share? What about any crazy moving stories?

What? No mugs in Box #5?!? Thanks for sharing this. We are moving to Germany in December (Thank you Army!) and even though we receive an “itemized and numbered list” from the packers, I think I will take my own notes as they pack to cross reference their “list”. Hope your move goes well.

Oh, I should add the picture of mugs that I had (and those are just the ones on the counter!). I will get on that! haha Good idea about making your own list, too. Good luck in Germany and with your move, too!
