As seen on…

30 Aug

TV my run today… I noticed a few things today on my run and thought I should share them, because they struck me as funny. Ok, well, two of them struck me as funny. The third is not so funny, I guess.

1. I saw a black squirrel for the first time ever. It was completely black. I’ve seen regular squirrels (obviously shades of brown) and an albino squirrel with beady red eyes, but a completely black squirrel? At first, I thought it was going to run out into the road and stop in front of me, which would have really freaked me out. It ran back under a parked car by the curb though. Thank goodness. It was so out of the ordinary that I thought about the superstitions people have about black cats crossing in front of them. Does a black squirrel count? If you’ve never seen one, they’re no joke. Check it out.

A1FN14 / Black SquirrelAnd apparently, these little guys are not that “old”. The first one was spotted in 1912 in Hertfordshire. And the article where I found this photo says they may outnumber red squirrels in England. Red squirrels?!?  This is getting outta hand.

Ok, enough about the squirrel. Maybe they’re everywhere and I’m just not normally paying attention.

2. When I was finishing up my run, I rounded a corner and saw a woman standing behind her mailbox on the sidewalk by herself. She seemed to be talking to someone next to her, but there was no one there. At first I thought maybe she had dementia and immediately I felt bad for her being outside by herself and wondered how long she’d been there. She was also talking in a baby voice. After running a few more feet, I realized that she was talking to her teeny dog who was doing his business about 15 feet away. I had to laugh. {I hope she didn’t hear me…}

3. This one’s not so funny. I have been busy with work all week and have only run one other day. I didn’t hydrate that well today before my run and I suffered through it with all the humidity and the “heat wave” we have here. I’m using quotation marks because it’s nothing compared to my southern summers growing up. That said, it’s hot for this area. Note to self: Get it together. Hydrate like you know you should. My splits were all positive 😦

August 30_splitsI was just happy to finish. Tomorrow is a longer run as I get ready for a 10K I have in a few weeks. I hope to get outside earlier than I did today to beat the heat and keep up my regular running schedule from now on. Hope you have a nice weekend!

Have you ever seen a completely black squirrel? What was your run today?

    I have never seen a black squirrel. Here in England, people are concern about red squirrels dying out because of the grey squirrels that were brought in from the states. I have been in England 11 years now and haven’t even seen a red squirrel except in pictures. They are smaller than the grey squirrel I think.
