Running through the Pacific Northwest…

26 Jan

Yep, I ran through the Pacific Northwest this morning…virtually anyways. No, I didn’t take another trip, but I did for about a half hour this morning on one of the coolest treadmills I’ve ever seen. Our gym has the Matrix treadmills with Virtual Active. We all know that treadmill running is b-o-r-i-n-g. But, what are you going to do when the temperatures are negative outside and it snows 4-5 inches overnight? For all you cold weather will-run-in-snow runners out there, zip it. I don’t do it.

This was my view this morning. Talk about a relaxing run πŸ™‚ {Click on the image to see the source.} It would be a really great walk/hike as well for anyone who prefers not to run.

Pacific Northwest runningSo far, I’ve run through southern California, the Pacific Northwest and Chicago. I liked all of these routes, but I want to try a few more still, like the Utah canyons and the Swiss Alps. If you’re aware of the geography of those two places, you know why I have avoided them so far.

My only complaint about the Virtual Active feature is that when it runs out of terrain in the area you choose, it takes you to another region. For example, I chose to run in the Pacific Northwest this morning. I really enjoyed running the streets of Seattle and through national parks. However, about 20 minutes into my run, it switched to the East Coast. Umm, I didn’t choose that. There’s a reason that I didn’t…it’s flatter on the routes offered on the West coast, thanks.

The nice thing is that you can change the incline if it becomes too hilly or rocky, as well as your speed, at any time. It’s a great workout, and it makes the boredom of treadmill running less painful. It also beats the TV selections at the gym as far as I’m concerned.

Another cool feature of the Virtual Active program is that it tells you the history and other fun facts about the place where you’re running. Who would think that you could walk away from a 30-minute run having learned something new? Runners and nerds unite!

Are you an outdoor runner/walker in the winter? Or do you take it indoors like me? Have you tried the Matrix treadmill with Virtual Active?

Woah ! That’s really cool and I would love it of I had a treadmill like that. It certainly makes it less boring. Love it.

It really is! It makes the treadmill more fun in general and it’s nice to know that I can choose to run in a new place each time I get on. Hope you find one– you’ll love it!
