Newborn Petal Collar Cardigan

05 Feb

So, I tried my hand at a new crochet project that I’ve been meaning to do for some time now. I haven’t done it until now, because I figured that anything with sleeves was pretty intimidating. Well, it wasn’t so bad after all.

DSC_2347I found this great pattern from one of my favorite Etsy shops and found some yarn in my stash {yeah, I could sink a ship with all the yarn I have}. I ended up using a little over 1 skein of Encore worsted weight in Purple Prelude (#0452) and a 4.00 mm hook.

The pattern by Mon Petit Violon is really well written, although there were some minor things I would ask her to add if I ever had the chance to give feedback on the pattern. Since I’d never made anything with sleeves or a collar, it took me a couple of times to get the petals just right on the collar and I had to redo one of the sleeves. Otherwise, I found the pattern to be very easy to follow, and I learned a new (to me) stitch in the process, the bobble stitch.

DSC_2334_edited-1I had some gray buttons on hand that I was going to use, but when I put them against the purple yarn, they didn’t seem to look as good as I thought they would have. They were too shiny for my taste. So, I found these little wooden buttons today at the craft store. I liked the idea of the flowers since the collar has petals as well.

DSC_2335After fastening off, I sewed the buttons on (my least favorite part of any crochet project!). And here’s the finished cardigan.

DSC_2348_edited-2I think for the next one I’ll use a 100% cotton yarn or a satin acrylic, and I’ll try to do the petals around the collar in another color. Since this was my first one, I think it turned out pretty well. This is a warm sweater because of the wool blend, so it will definitely be a great gift for a baby girl born in the winter.

I think I’ll work on a boy sweater for my next clothing article….perhaps something with a hood and pockets. ๐Ÿ™‚

Are you crocheting any clothing for friends having babies lately? Have you ever crocheted a baby cardigan? What types of yarn do you like best for these pieces?
