Easy tweaks for organization

09 Mar

Springing forward was not so fun…at least not for me. I dread “springing forward” and losing that hour of sleep, but the good news is that we have an extra hour of daylight. I’ll take it! I have a never-ending list of things to organize, clean out, purge and donate in my house right now, but I’m taking the spring cleaning thing kind of slowly…kind of like spring’s arrival, if you know what I mean.

It seems like I just cannot get through my magazine subscriptions fast enough because I always have other tasks to tackle first. I know…#firstworldproblems. At the very least, I wanted to organize my “to read” pile because it was getting out of control. I still have magazines from the holidays (2013) to read. I was also getting overwhelmed by our mail pile. It’s not big by any means, but I don’t like it taking up our counter space, so I figured I’d try to round up the mail and mags in one full swoop.

I started out by grabbing two of these baskets at Target (pssst…they’re on clearance right now) last weekend. I also had some faux chalkboard hanging tags that I was saving for a project like this one.

Basket organization4I used a white paint pen to label them for mail and magazines and pinned the twine to the inside of the basket to hide the safety pin. I had to go over the letters several times.

Basket organization5And added my magazines…

Basket organization3Then I made one for our mail, and both are now sitting on the bar that separates our kitchen and dining area. We don’t eat at the bar, so there was no harm in taking up that counter space. Sorry for the dark photos. These are unedited photos I took with my phone.

Basket organization1Another thing I have on my list to organize is my jewelry. I have a lot of it and want to be able to see it all so that I can wear everything (not at once, of course ๐Ÿ˜‰ ). When things are tucked away, I tend to forget about them and not wear/use them. I haven’t finished organizing my accessories, but I started with my watches at least. {These areย not all of my watches, but they’re the ones I’m using the most lately. Like I said, I haveย a lot. And I like it that way.}

I found this glass jewelry case at TJ Maxx on the clearance shelf (yep, another clearance find!) and quickly snatched it up.

Watch box2The only thing I didn’t like about it was the design in the bottom.

Watch box3I wasn’t able to remove it, so I decided to cover it. I grabbed a decorative sheet of card stock at Michael’s for $0.59 this week and cut it to size. Once I laid it in the box, it instantly looked better. The stripes match our sheets exactly, and I’m really digging grays right now. This shot was before I used double-sided tape to keep the paper in, so it’s not lined up exactly yet, but you get the point.

Watch box4And finished!

Watch box1I’d like to find one or two more of these types of boxes for other items that don’t easily hang on my jewelry rack. I like how they look more decorative than a closed jewelry box sitting on the dresser. And they don’t take up much space. Plus, I can see everything!

Now, to get to the rest of my list….Maybe I’ll be finished by the end of spring!

Are you feeling the need to tidy up your clutter lately? Do you have any fun DIY projects that have helped you to stay organized? Please feel free to share!
