This Season of Life: 11/52 “today + always”

03 May

This Season of Life is a 52-week photography project through which my friend Mary and I will share photos that depict various moments from the current season in which we find ourselves. Having remained friends for the past 12 years, we have experienced a lot of seasons together (and some apart), as we now live in very different places. Having stayed in touch, we continue to share our life experiences and challenges with one another. This has been an incredible gift that continues to shape our friendship. We hope you will follow our Project 52 and enjoy the images that we share.

I was never into hearts as a symbol or adornment on jewelry. In fact, I would steer clear of them if I saw them as an option. I can’t really say why. They seemed a little too “cutesy” for me, maybe? But for various reasons in the past year, the symbol of the “heart” has taken on a new meaning for me. And this piece by my good friend Amy Lin of a3AmyLin very much takes on the meaning that I now associate with the heart. Her words to describe the pieces she makes are breathtaking, and her work even more so. Watch for her to launch her new website later this year. She is truly talented and each piece, made by hand from start to finish, has such meaning behind it. For now, you can follow her on Instagram. Do you appreciate the heart symbol? What does it mean for you?

Now, take a moment and check out my friend Mary’s photo this week: Morning Dew. While you’re at it, look around her site, Moe-Digger Photography, a bit more and view our last Project 52. I am sure you will fall in love with her photos and see what a special person she is, just as I have.

Love. Love. (And totally get what you mean by steering clear of hearts, I was the same, but it’s also changed for me over the years.)

Hearts have always been a talisman of mine, and they have symbolized many things for me at different times in my life-none of which is the largely popular symbol of romantic love or a cutesie pop-culture icon. The first one for me was friendship: In elementary school I wrote a code to communicate with my friends in notes, and the “L” was a “<3. I also still have the gold plated engraved heart pin that my best friend gave me in 7th grade! Now decades later I see it as the universal origin of goodness: it symbolizes strength, giving, purity and passion–and I firmly believe that as long as one feels and acts from a good heart, there is a boomerang effect that results in happiness all around.

I also didn’t go for the cutesie icon or romantic symbol. It was too cliché for me. This year though, the heart has become a really important image for me. While I won’t be collecting heart pieces, I do have a couple now that I will cherish. 🙂
